When it comes to tracking food intake, people think they have to go to straight-up macro counting. If you aren't familiar with macro counting, this is a step in the wrong direction!
The information you can gain from seeing this is endless and this serves as a great form of self-monitoring to in a way, hold yourself accountable.
This will give you a clear visual of what & how much you’re eating. Then you can adjust the amount of food daily —because you can see how much that is, to help you get results.
Tracking macros is just one method of many to track daily food intake. But, it’s not meant for all. In fact, out of all my clients there are only a few that track.
The rest follow different methods of tracking their intake daily based on what they prefer and what they can stick to.
This isn’t just to have them grow into tracking macros in the future because some people never will but, more importantly this is to give them a visual and an experience of what and how much they’re eating at each meal, every day.
Some people follow portion sizes, customized menus of foods & some other methods. This allows them to not focus on numbers but get a real understanding of how to create meals daily, that are full of nutritious foods. Since I’ve had clients go from a simpler method like portion sizes into macros and some from macros into a simpler method I think it’s important to mention that you shouldn’t think you’re bound to one method forever. There are levels to tracking and appropriate times for each.
No matter the method you use, you should be practicing good nutritional habits regardless. Choosing minimally processed, whole & nutrient dense foods over processed foods, actually giving a $#@% about micronutrients, eating slowly & mindfully, not eating in bed, & limiting screen time when eating to name a few.
These are things people can take away after working with a coach and still feel confident that they learned and can apply to get results with. What good would I be to the industry as a coach if I didn’t want people to be better no matter what.
So, the take away point is to find a method of tracking you’re comfortable with and use it to help you get results. Start with something simple like using your hands. Don't know how? Click here to find out!
